18 Sep Individual Tax Filing Extension Deadline is October 15th

Taxpayers who filed an extension for the July 15th deadline must file by October 15. If you did not request an extension and have yet to file a 2019 tax return, you may be able to avoid additional penalties and interest by filing the return as soon as possible and paying any taxes owed.

Convenient electronic filing options, including IRS Free File, are still available.

Although October 15 is the last day for most people to file, some taxpayers may have more time. They include:

  • Members of the military and others serving in a combat zone. They typically have 180 days after they leave the combat zone to file returns and pay any taxes due.
  • Taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas who already had valid extensions. For details, see the disaster relief page on IRS.gov.

The IRS also sent letters to approximately 9 Million people who typically aren’t required to file federal income tax returns but may qualify for an Economic Impact Payment. The letter urges them to visit the special Non-Filers: Enter Payment tool on IRS.gov before the October 15 deadline to register for an Economic Impact Payment.
